--> First he established which rats liked to drink by giving them the opportunity to drink freely from either of two bottles—one filled with tap water and one containing 10 percent alcohol. Then he picked nineteen rats that tended to like the alcohol the most, and divided them into two groups. One group received 100 mg of L-glutamine mixed with their food, the other group didn't. At the end of 17 days, he returned all the rats to a regular diet of Purina rat chow and watched and measured what they drank. | Cold compress: Apply a wet compress of cold tap water to the affected area for 20 minutes four to eight times a day to encourage the rash to resolve.
Pain relief: Tylenol®, Motrin®, or in severe cases, codeine may be needed to relieve pain. A lidocaine skin patch may also be given for pain relief.
Preventive measures: If you are infected, avoid young children, pregnant women, and anyone with a compromised immune system to avoid passing the virus to them. Stress reduction is also recommended as it helps prevent outbreaks. More rest may be required during an outbreak of shingles as well. | Cadmium sources include tap water, fungicides, marijuana, processed meat, rubber, seafood (cod, haddock, oyster, tuna), sewage, tobacco, colas (especially from vending machines), tools, welding material, evaporated milk, airborne industrial contaminants, batteries, instant coffee, incineration of tires/rubber/plastic, refined grains, soft water, galvanized pipes, dental alloys, candy, ceramics, electroplating, fertilizers, paints, motor oil, and motor exhaust. | Approximately 70% of the toxins from tap water enter the body through the skin; the remaining 30% of the toxins enter via ingestion.7
Chemicals found in dry-cleaning fluids (trichloroethylene), paint solvents (toluene), municipal water supplies (phenol and chlorine), carpets and flooring (formaldehyde), and some imported produce (pesticide residues) are also potentially harmful, depending on your level of susceptibility. Studies have proven that these chemicals can interfere with proper nerve and muscle function, cause skeletal and muscular changes, and alter mental functioning. | A four-year study conducted by the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council found contaminants in one-third of bottled water samples to exceed EPA tap water standards. Other independent studies have discovered fluoride, phthalates, trihalomethanes, and arsenic in bottled water, coming either from the bottling process or from the bottles themselves. Environmental groups are also concerned about the amount of waste that these plastic bottles create. | We drink them in tap water, which contains chemicals leached from contaminated soils, environmental pollutants, and even chemicals added deliberately such as fluoride. We absorb them through our skin from cosmetics, toiletries, treated wood, sprayed plants, treated areas of public parks, golf courses, bath water, and swimming pools. We even inhale them in air contaminated with solvents, car fumes, industrial waste, and environmental pollutants.
The problem is that our bodies were never designed to protect themselves against this form of chemical onslaught. | | Unfiltered tap water is often contaminated with chemicals and bacteria.
• Eat meat sparingly. To start cutting back, eat smaller portions of beef, poultry, and pork.
• Limit alcohol to small amounts, and don't drink often.
• Don't drink diet soda and soft drinks. They are high in phosphorous, which can leech minerals from your bones. Plus the sugar and synthetic sweeteners they contain have their own negative effects.
• Give up caffeine as soon as possible. Look for more natural ways to boost your energy. | Higher body levels of mercury are also found in people with a large number of amalgam (mercury-containing) fillings. Fortunately, it seems that if levels of toxic metals are lowered using specially targeted supplements (as are found in this program) then the chance of conception can be greatly improved.
Research into chlorine by-product levels in tap water, as a consequence of water chlorination, found that chlorine by-products in water may harm the developing fetuses, increasing the risk of miscarriage and birth defects. | | This cancer-inducing effect has been demonstrated in a study performed on women drinking chlorinated tap water in Louisiana.
Other chlorine-containing chemicals known to cause breast cancer are the organochlorines. This notorious, highly toxic and persistent group of chemicals includes the pesticides DDT and lindane, as well as the environmental pollutants, such as PCBs and dioxin. Much of the research into chemicals and breast cancer includes studies that have found breast cancer patients to have higher levels of these chemicals in their breast tissue and blood. | | Drinking and bathing in unfiltered tap water (due to the deliberately added aluminum and chlorine disinfectant, fluorine, and the general water contaminants).
Where to Go From Here
The good news is that by making simple lifestyle changes, it is possible to significantly lower the level of toxic chemicals in your body. Throughout the rest of Part I, I will guide you through three simple steps for ridding your food, home, and body of dangerous toxins that contribute to disease. | | Always filter or distill tap water before drinking it. If you use bottled water, buy it in a glass bottle in preference to a plastic one. If you can, install a household waterfilterto reduce the chemicals absorbed through the skin during baths and showers. | | Other chemicals linked to high blood pressure are chlorine (as in tap water), fluorocarbons, carbon disulfide, asbestos, ozone, and plastics. For example, factory workers exposed over a number of years to the plastic vinyl chloride are known to have a markedly higher chance of developing hypertension. The higher the level of the chemical in their bodies, the greater the risk of hypertension.
If you just think of all the places where you can now find plastics and all these other chemicals in our modern world, it is no wonder that more and more people are developing high blood pressure. | Frequently Eaten Foods
Test tap water, if you have eliminated it, followed by those foods you have restricted (such as foods you consume more than 3 times a week).
Optional Tests
The following foods and beverages are considered undesirable, regardless of whether or not you are allergic to them. If any of them are not now a part of your diet, or if you are fully committed to eliminating them from your diet, you don't need to test them. However, if you have been consuming any of them regularly, it is a good idea to test them and find out how they affect you. | In addition, tap water contains significant levels of nitrates, trihalomethanes, lead, and aluminum, all antinutrients in their own right. In much of Britain and the United States, the levels of these antinutrients exceed safety limits. Approximately a quarter of all British tap water contains pesticides at levels above maximum admissible concentrations set by the EU for safety.
Concerns over pollutants in water have led many people to switch to bottled, distilled, or filtered water. | Inorganic minerals from tap water can enter the body, filter through the system and damage the fine capillaries in the eyes.
Avoid all caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks) as it damages the fine nerve tissues in the eyes.
Table salt should be avoided as it tends to raise the blood pressure. This puts excessive pressure on the tiny capillaries in the eyes.
Several books describe specific programs including eye exercises you can do to restore eye strength and vision. Relearning To See, by Thomas R. Quackenbush, may be beneficial for you to study. | Drink three to four cups throughout the day; always use pure water, never tap water. This tea will reduce appetite and increase metabolism and energy. It's important to drink throughout the day, starting first thing in the morning, and ideally drink some every few hours. This will reduce appetite and increase fat-burning properties in your body throughout the day.
If you do these things and nothing else, at the end of thirty days, without changing any eating habits consciously, you will absolutely have lost a tremendous amount of weight and, more importantly, lost inches. | Drink six to eight glasses of clean water per day - avoid tap water. Clean water is the primary beverage to consume between meals and may be consumed with meals. Teas that do not have any sweetener are acceptable in moderation, as long as they do not upset the stomach or induce food cravings. Organic green tea is preferred. Carbonated water may disturb digestion and induce cravings. Some is acceptable as long as it does not cause problems; definitely do not live on it as the 6-8 glasses of water per day. | Any synthetic or chemical substance that has found its way into food by vicarious means, such as growth hormones and antibiotics fed to livestock, pesticides sprayed on produce, and tap water that contains toxic chemicals such as chlorine, lead, arsenic, etc.
• Any substance that may have once been considered food, but which has subsequently been processed to the degree that the chemical makeup is so greatly altered that it can no longer be considered a real food according to any reasonable standards (white refined sugar or flour, high fructose corn syrup, highly refined oils, etc.). | | She placed it in the sink and began filling it with tap water. It brought to mind another evening when I forgot my water bottle and with no alternative available, was unhappily forced to buy a bottle of water from the vending machine that had a list of funky-sounding chemical additives an inch long. It seemed like a strange oversight on their part not to have water dispensers available at a health and recreation facility, not to mention a cumbersome task for the coordinator who was now struggling to maneuver the large jug in the not-so-large sink. | | All health experts warn against drinking tap water with its high chlorine and chemical content. Filtered, distilled or ionized micro-filtered water is best. Recent studies have now been finding an array of excreted pharmaceutical drugs in our drinking water, especially antibiotics because of their widespread agricultural use, which is another good reason to drink purified water!
3 ~ eat 2-4 pieces of fresh fruit daily
.. .preferably organic and in season.
Fruit has been recognized throughout history as truly one of nature's delicacies. | When you are thirsty, it is best to do what nature really wants you to do: drink some calorie-free water, the original diet drink. If tap water doesn't excite you (either because of taste or contaminants in your community), consider using a Brita or Pur water filter. Bottled water is also an option. You can improve the taste of filtered or bottled water by refrigerating it and by adding a wedge of lemon or lime when you serve it.
European brands of sparkling mineral water, again with a wedge of lemon or lime, make a sensible beverage with lunch or dinner. | Importance of Drinking Pure Water
Most tap water in the United States contains two potentially toxic additives: chlorine (which is used as a disinfectant), and fluoride (which is put in the water to prevent dental cavities). Chlorine is a powerful oxidizing agent, and it has the potential to accelerate the aging process by inducing free-radical damage to cells. Evidence also suggests that ingesting chlorinated water may increase the risk of heart disease23 and some types of cancer.24
Fluoride is a known poison that inhibits a number of essential biochemical processes. | Dietary changes that may be helpful
When traveling in developing countries, people should avoid drinking tap water and eating uncooked foods, foods prepared by street vendors, ice, and fruits that cannot be peeled. All of these are potential sources of parasitic infection. People should not drink untreated stream water while camping, as it is frequently almost invariably contaminated with giardia, even in the United States. Undercooked fish, meat and poultry can also contain parasites. | Chlorine can be removed from tap water by boiling it for 5 to 10 minutes, or by adding a pinch of vitamin C crystals to the water.
Other Dietary Factors
Eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes may help protect against heart disease. The apparent protective effect of nuts,7,8 which are high in fat, may be due to their essential-fatty-acid content.
In addition to the items discussed above, a number of other components of our diet may promote or contribute to atherosclerosis. | Some studies have shown that up to 10 percent of gastroenteritis (inflammation of the digestive tract) hospital admissions come from microbes in tap water, particularly river water.82 Some bottled water, however, is nothing more than tap water. If the label says "purified" water, not spring water, the water may have come from someone else's tap, as purification is the customary process used everywhere to remove the major contaminants. Check the source. Buyer beware!
Remember that dehydration can make you feel tired and lethargic and will decrease your capacity for exercise. | Dietary changes that may be helpful
A vegan (pure vegetarian) diet given for one year in conjunction with many specific dietary changes (such as avoidance of caffeine, sugar, salt, and chlorinated tap water) and combined with a variety of herbs and supplements led to significant improvement in one group of asthmatics.8 Although 16 out of 24 people who continued the intervention for the full year were much better and one person was actually cured, it remains unclear how much of the action was purely a result of the dietary changes compared with the many other therapies employed. | A whole slew of innovative tools can capture that rainwater (and recycle the slightly dusty tap water) to serve other needs. Some of these technologies make even more sense in the Global South, where there are often no pipes or sewers to begin with.
Most of us in the Global North could fairly easily go off the electrical grid if we wanted to; going "off the pipe" is quite a bit harder. | People drinking tap water from new copper pipes should consult their doctor before supplementing, since they might be getting enough (or even too much) copper from their water. People with Wilson's disease (page 453) should never take copper.
Zinc interferes with copper absorption. People taking zinc supplements for more than a few weeks should also take copper (unless they have Wilson's disease). In the absence of copper supplementation, vitamin C (page 604) may interfere with copper metabolism. Copper improves absorption and utilization of iron (page 540). | | Hard tap water can also supply molybdenum to the diet. Molybdeum is also available as a supplement.
Molybdenum has been used in connection with the following condition (refer to the individual health concern for complete information):
Rating Health Concerns Asthma (page 32)
Who is likely to be deficient?
Although molybdenum is an essential mineral, no deficiencies have been reported in humans.
How much is usually taken?
No recommended dietary allowance (RDA) has been established for molybdenum. | Finally, the aluminum burden increases with the tap water added at home to reconstitute soy formula from powder. 710
CALLING AL FORMULAS
The aluminum levels of all infant formulas are much, much higher than those of breast milk, with the very highest levels found in soy formulas made with soy protein isolate. Soy infant formulas contain 100 times the aluminum found in breast milk. When it comes to manufacturing infant formulas, the more high-tech, industrial processes are used, the more aluminum appears in the final product. | |
