-->| Modern methods also speed up the pre-soaking phase with the use of an alkaline solution, skip the squeezing and skimming steps, use common tap water, and cook the soy paste in a pressure cooker. The speed comes at a cost: the high pH of the soaking solution followed by pressure cooking destroys key nutrients, including vitamins and the sulfur-containing amino acids. This processing combination also decreases the quality of the amino
UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED
Homemade soy milk would appear to be fresher, cleaner and safer than readymade packaged brews. | | Humans beings are exposed to aluminum from drinking water, aluminum foil, food and drinks in aluminum cans and containers, aluminum cooking pans (including high-end products such as Calphalon), antacids and other medications, antiperspirants and tap water. Many cities add aluminum to the public water supply. If the water is fluoridated as well, the fluoride will increase the leaching of aluminum from aluminum pots, pans and foils. | | Fluoride—found in high levels in soy formula (see Chapter 22) and in most of the tap water used to mix soy formula—can increase manganese absorption.3941 Zinc, calcium and iron deficiencies can also push manganese absorption up to toxic levels.4244 Animal studies suggest that an infant born to a woman with low calcium and/or iron status is more susceptible to the negative effects of manganese.45 Sub-optimal liver function can also contribute to manganese toxicity. | | The levels increase considerably when formulas are reconstituted with fluoridated tap water.2128 Making matters worse, soy formula is not only high in fluoride but also in aluminum (see Chapter 23) and cadmium. Cadmium levels in soy formula are six times higher than those in milk formula, according to one study, and 8 to 15 times higher according to another.2930 Cadmium is a toxic metal that contributes to heart disease, cancer, diabetes and reproductive ills. | | We never used fluoride toothpaste, tap water or fluoride sealants so it must have been the fluoride in the soy formula that later caused the stains on my son's teeth. I remember walking into the bathroom and watching Joey trying to scrape the stains off his teeth with a sewing needle. People asked him whether he ever brushed his teeth. The children at school ridiculed him about his teeth. | Because of these problems with tap water, we advise our patients to use bottled spring water, distilled water, or filtered water for drinking and cooking. Distilling water or filtering it by reverse osmosis or other powerful techniques removes not only toxic contaminants, but also essential minerals.
Individuals who consume demineralized water should therefore supplement their diet with a multimineral formula. | The taste of chlorinated tap water can be improved by keeping the water in an uncovered pitcher for several hours to allow the chlorine taste and odor to dissipate.
Water can also be aerated in a blender to remove chlorine and other chemicals. Nevertheless, neither of these last two methods will improve the quality of the water—only the taste.
Filtration is a means by which contaminants in water are removed, rendering the water cleaner and better tasting. There are many different ways in which water can be filtered. | August, 2001: Coca-Cola announces the launch of an assault against tap water in restaurants, code-named "H2No." (No, I'm not making this up...) They begin with the Olive Garden restaurants, describing customers' ordering of water as a kind of affliction. From their own site, "Olive Garden restaurants... were facing a high water incidence rate." (emphasis added).
A "high water incidence rate?" Sounds bad, doesn't it? Sounds like an insidious anthrax attack. To combat this threat, they came up with their "water reduction plan. | About half of our tap water comes from treated surface water. Giardia is a much bigger problem. It is commonly found in the pretreated water system used by some 40 million Americans and has caused epidemics in several small cities.
Giardiasis ranks among the top 20 infectious diseases that cause the greatest morbidity in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It is the most common parasite diagnosed in North America. The CDC estimates that two million Americans contract giardiasis every year.19
Giardia can live in a variety of water sources: streams, ponds, puddles, tap water, and swimming pools. | You are highly vulnerable to microorganisms and toxins, so never drink tap water.
Be kind to your kidneys. Along with avoiding saturated fats and animal meats, restrict your salt intake.
Detoxification
Anyone with an autoimmune disorder should practice regular juice fasts to keep the body functioning at its peak. Try a three-day juice fast once a month. You can support the fast with plenty of green drinks and cleansing herbal teas.
Super Seven Prescriptions—Lupus
Super Prescription #1 Fish oil
Take up to 20 grams of fish oil daily and a minimum of 8 grams. | This means you must check all food labels as well as other sources of exposure such as antiperspirants, medications, aluminum cans and containers, aluminum cookware and utensils, tap water containing aluminum, and aluminum-containing plant sources such as tea, condiments, and herbs. The safest containers are made of glass. (Plastic containers are not particularly safe as they can release PVCs, cadmium, and estrogenic substances.)
Never drink tea with lemon. Remember, citrate from fruits greatly increases aluminum absorption. | | As if that weren't bad enough, the tap water also contains fluoride, which forms toxic complexes and enhances aluminum absorption.1*5
Normally, absorption of aluminum from the gastrointestinal tract is rather low (0.1 percent) and excretion from the body is rather rapid following absorption. But, certain tissues, such as the brain, tend to gather the aluminum and hold onto it tightly. Also, people with poor kidney function are at special risk for aluminum toxicity, because their bodies cannot excrete ingested aluminum as efficiently as a person with normal kidneys. | | The same level of certainty cannot be applied to baby formulas reconstituted with tap water, especially in fluoridated areas of the country. You may recall that fluoridated communities have almost twice the lead levels in their water as unfluoridated communities. I would, therefore, discourage all mothers from using any commercial baby formulas; if you must, at least do not use anything but distilled or properly filtered water to reconstitute the formula. You must also add DHA to the formula. | | Once the "fresh vegetables" arrive at your supermarket, they are placed in display bins and intermittently sprayed with a fine mist of tap water that often is fluoridated, adding further to the fluoride burden of the plant.
My children loved the taste of one brand of orange juice from Florida, but because of my research in this area, I decided to call the headquarters of the orange juice company and ask if they used local drinking water. Their representative said, "Yes." I then asked if the local water was fluoridated and again she answered, "Yes. | Do not overload the liver and kidneys); avoid Proteins for 6 weeks, and tap water pollutants.
Potassium Acetate From distilled vinegar on Potassium carbonate. Upto 1 tsp.as diuretic; 2-3 tsp. cathartic.
Potassium Bromide Antiscorbutic, nerve sedative, induces sleep, rids epilepsy (If 15-20 grains taken steadily for months).
Potassium Citrate Formed by citric acid or Lemon juice on Potassium Carbonate. Refrigerant, diaphoretic in fever (20-25 grains).
Potassium Nitrate Saltpeter, nitre. Refrigerant, diaphoretic, 10-20 grains a powerful diuretic esp. | | Tap water fluorine and chlorine combine with fats in soy, canola and cottonseed to form atherosclerotic plaques, sluggish lymph, and aging.
In the spine.there are Lymph centers that can be adjusted at the 4th Lumbar, 9th Dorsal, and 3rd Cervical vertebrae, commingling with cerebrospinal nerves and the blood circulation.
Improve Lymph action with body movement, stretching, exercise, raisingthe extremities, deep breathing, massage, load-bearing work, and hot and cold baths.
Take Vitamin A Carotene; 2000 mg. | | Body fluids have a surface tension of 40 dynes, distilled water 75 dynes, tap water can be 80 dynes, requiring metabolic treatment of some water intake. Hunza glacial water rich in colloidal Minerals has the electrical "zeta" potential of wetter, 40-dyne water; also provided by Carotec's Crystal Energy Concentrate (down to 35 dynes). Water-Soluble Minerals are: Sodium (Na+), Chloride (C1-), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca++), and Phosphate (Po—). SEE Water after Hydrogen. | | Oxygen CONSTRAINTS: Sugar robs tissue Oxygen; shallow breathing; lack of exercise; the destruction of trees and airborne pollution reduces sea-level 20% Oxygen to 10%; in 1991, some American cities had levels as low as 17%; unbalanced carbon monoxide strips Oxygen from the blood to form waste carbon dioxide; unoxygenated tap water with contaminants, and cooking depletes Oxygen.
Oxygen DEFICIENCY SIGNS: Short of breath, emphysema, pulmonary edema, pneumonia; low energy, anemia, poorthinking. | Charcoal is the same material used to filter heavy metals out of municipal water supplies or to filter tap water in kitchen faucet filters. When taken internally, it binds with heavy metals and carries those heavy metals with it through your digestive tract, eliminating them from your body. These must be taken at the time of consuming heavy metals, and keep in mind that charcoal will nullify the acidity of your stomach acid, which reduces your ability to absorb other important nutrients, including minerals. So don't take charcoal with every meal. | Regular tap water can contain chlorine and other chemicals that might have an interaction or chain reaction with one or more of the many chemicals found in plants.
Instructions for the main preparation methods used throughout this book in the reference guides and in the main plant section are detailed below.
Local market in Iquitos, Peru selling cat's claw.
Infusions
Infusions are typically used for delicate herbs, leaves, and fresh tender plants. Preparing an infusion is much like making a cup of tea. | It is good, since tap water in most areas is polluted with fluoride, arsenic, aluminum, pesticides, herbicides, and other organic chemicals. As we saw in chapter seven, the presence of fluoride in the water increases lead content as well. The more you drink, the worse is the pollution of your body. Many of these pollutants are fat-soluble, meaning that they will be with you for a long time, and they will accumulate in the nervous system.
You should drink pure water, either distilled or filtered through a reverse osmosis type filter. | Don't use tap water to clean contact lenses. Use sterilized lens solutions.
10. Keep toddlers away from puppies and kittens that have not been regularly dewormed, and do not let them kiss animals.
Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Stress
Here are some suggestions that are especially for you if you scored highly in the Have I Got Stress-related Digestive Problems?
1. Stop activities that are not directly helpful to your work, social life or economic goals. Schedule more time for appointments or other tasks. Wake up 15-20 minutes earlier than usual.
2. | | The major sources of contamination are from tap water, improperly cooked or stored food, pets and their feces, human feces (from diapers, etc.) and via infections acquired abroad. The international spread of parasitic infections has occurred relatively swiftly and is due, at least in part, to the very same causes behind the rise of food intolerances.
International travel should not be played down in its role as a source of parasitic infection. For example, I will never forget that when I visited St. Petersburg in 1989 there was a Giardia infection in the whole of the city's water supply. | If you find that your tap water is unacceptable either because of its taste or because of its toxic chemical content, you may choose to use one of the alternative water supplies described in this section.
The Water Quality Association (see Health and Medical Organizations in the Appendix) is prepared to answer questions about the various types of water and methods of water treatment. In addition, the EPA operates the toll-free Safe Drinking Water Hotline, which can help you to locate an office or laboratory in your area that does certified water testing. | | If you are concerned about the safety of the water coming out of your tap, you can contact your local water officials or local health department, which may test your tap water free of charge. In some cases, you may have to contact your state's water supply or health department. Typically, however, these agencies test the water only for bacteria levels, not for toxic substances. Therefore, you might want to contact a commercial laboratory or local state university laboratory to test your water for its chemical content. | | If your tap water contains fluoride, and you wish to remove it, you can use a reverse osmosis, distillation, or activated alumina filtration system to eliminate almost all of the fluoride from your water.
Water Analysis
Not all drinking water contains significant amounts of toxic substances. Some places rate higher in water safety than others. In addition, not all cities and towns process their water supplies the same way. Some do nothing at all to their water. Others add chemicals to the water to kill bacteria. Still others filter their water. | | And according to a study released in 1995, 54 million Americans drank tap water that was contaminated by feces, radiation, lead, or dangerous parasites.
If you receive your water from a municipal water source, that utility is now required to send an assessment of the water, including information about where it comes from, any contaminants that have been found in it, and any health risk associated with substances in the water. This should be sent to you in your water bill on an annual basis. | | This is especially important for retention enemas—you do not want to absorb any chemicals from the tap water.
Ql To maximize the benefits of this or any other retention enema, use a cleansing enema first.
Q| Do not abuse coffee enemas by using them too often. Use them only once daily while following a program for a specific disorder, unless you are being treated for cancer. People with cancer may need up to three enemas a day. You may also use coffee and wheatgrass enemas occasionally as needed. | It must be taken with 8 ounces of plain tap water, not mineral water, at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. The patient must remain standing or sitting during that time to keep the pill from lodging in the throat, where it can cause damage. | | Taking Fosamax with anything other than plain tap water reduces the amount that is absorbed and lessens its effectiveness. Changing the regimen so that it is taken only once a week, and only half an hour before breakfast, has made it easier for women to follow the doctor's orders.
The effectiveness of all of the bisphosphonate medicines is clearest in people who are at highest risk: those who already have osteoporosis, particularly those who have experienced one or more fractures. The bisphosphonates are not hormones and don't work through the same mechanisms as hormones. | |
