Our goal at home or when traveling is to have germ-free water without chemicals or chlorine. Filtration is the best way to do this. I have discussed home filters. There are also filters designed for travel and camping. These are small units that have pumps so lake or river waters can be used. Since the recent outbreaks of giardiasis contracted by drinking the crystal clear, good-tasting mountain stream waters in our country, even wilderness packers need to carry some type of water purification. |  In addition, look in the Yellow Pages of your telephone book under "Water Purification & Filtration Equipment" for a list of local companies that sell water purification units. Many of their ads will mention free water testing. Make sure that the company you call is certified as a water treatment specialist (certified by the Water Quality Association or some other third-party organization). The water treatment specialist can determine which contaminants are an issue and can recommend the appropriate filtration method for your needs. |  Single-celled organisms such as Cryptosporidium and giardia are particularly troublesome because they can often slip through water purification treatment unharmed. Since these organisms are protected by a tough outer coat, the chlorine added to municipal water supplies to kill germs has little effect on them. Because of their small size, very fine filters are needed to trap them, and complete elimination of these parasites from tap water isn't possible. |  Reverse osmosis water purification systems can remove uranium and radium. Activated carbon filters will remove radon. We will discuss these and other water purification methods later in the chapter.

CHAMELEON MINERAL ? | | Reverse osmosis technology alone satisfies all the stated criteria for excellence in water purification, provided the membrane quality is sufficient. If applied in combination with activated carbon filtration, whereby the reverse osmosis-treated water (stage 1) would then be filtered through the charcoal (stage 2), any organic pollutants remaining after stage 1 would thereby be removed. What is left is alive, tasty, clean water with some of its natural minerals. | | One of the best is the use of a home water purification system. Such a system should satisfy the following criteria:
• Removal of organic chemicals.
• Removal of inorganic chemicals.
• Removal of biological agents (bacteria, viruses, parasites).
• Removal of such physical agents as asbestos (a common contaminant from asbestos-lined concrete pipes used in municipal water systems).
• Retention of all healthful minerals.
A good system should not promote growth of bacteria, require a lot of maintenance, or cost a lot of money to operate. |  It is the only reliable home water purification system for taking fluoride out of the water. The device you buy should produce at least 1 gallon per day per family member. It should contain a holding tank of 2-3 or more gallons. It should be automatic with an automatic water feed and an automatic turnoff when the holding tank is full. It should be designed so that after the water is distilled, the only material the water comes in contact with is stainless steel or glass. Try to avoid water distillers that have a plastic holding tank. | | Perhaps the biggest problem associated with aluminum is its use in water purification plants. According to the Flanagans, most purification systems add too much aluminum. The result is that the excess aluminum ions end up in tap water. The municipal water systems also routinely add cationic mineral salts which show up in the tap water. A high amount of cations (positive ions) in the water of any sort also destroys zeta potential. Aside from the aluminum cans, beer itself, because it contains large amounts of cationic minerals, drops zeta potential. |  Because of health concerns about these chemicals, Taster's Choice and Nescafe are decaffeinated with a water purification process.52 Are they healthier? There is no evidence yet one way or the other. Moderate coffee use does not seem to increase the risk of heart problems, but researchers have not ruled out the possibility of risk from heavy coffee use (greater than 4 cups of coffee per day).
So the main problems from coffee are calcium loss, aggravations of PMS, and stomach acid secretion, along with the insomnia and jitters that most coffee drinkers are familiar with. | | We will discuss these and other water purification methods later in the chapter.

Products and Uses: A controversial chemical used in angel food cake, beverage bases, citrus fruit (fresh), egg white (frozen), egg white (liquid), egg white solids, fruit juice drink, marshmallows, poultry, and vegetable oils. |  In the United States, starvation is no longer an issue for most people, and water purification, sewage disposal, and medical advances have eliminated most of the infectious diseases that decimated our Paleolithic ancestors. But we're dying of diseases that our ancestors never could have imagined, in part because they ate a diet that protected them.
That's why I'm such a strong advocate of the Paleolithic diet—low-fat, plant-based, and near-vegetarian. |  To avoid the hazards of fluoride, the best solution is to buy bottled spring water or use a high-quality water purification system in your home. Unfortunately, carbon filters—the most popular filters on the market—remove some of the odor, chlorine, bacteria, and particulates, but they don't remove fluoride. The more expensive reverse osmosis filters and ion-exchange systems can. Be alerted, however, that fluoride is not just in tap water, but is used to grow crops and in the preparation of processed foods, soft drinks, and beer. |  Charles Coles)

Presumably, they evaporate in hot water and are inhaled. Ten minutes of showering or thirty minutes of bathing can raise the burden of choloform in your body more than drinking two quarts of tap water.59 A filtration system connected to the water supply for your home or apartment is well worth the investment. If this cannot be done, showerhead filters that remove chlorine will help to prevent the release of chloroform gas during hot showers (see Appendix B). |  Based on BCME and CMME, R&H chemists developed manufacturing processes for ion-exchange resins and promoted their application in various technologies, including water purification, and fabrication of nuclear weapons and fuel for power plants.

SODIUM CITRATE • White, odorless crystals, granules, or powder with a cool salty taste. Stable in air. | | Also used in water purification. Found in the earth's crust, it is a greenish yellow gas with a suffocating odor. A powerful irritant, dangerous to inhale, and lethal. Thirty ppm will cause coughing. The chlorine used in drinking water often contains carcinogenic carbon tetrachloride, a contaminant formed during the production process. Chlorination has also been found to sometimes form undesirable "ring" compounds in water, such as toluene, xylene, and the suspected carcinogen styrene—they have been observed in both the drinking water and wastewater plants in the Midwest. |  Hikers and campers should stay away from using elemental iodine for water purification.
Povidone iodine, an organic form of iodine sold as Betadine, is an excellent topical antiseptic agent. Some, however, are allergic to this substance.
Related to Negative Claims:
1) Toxic—High doses of iodine may aggravate or precipitate acne. With the difficulty of boiling at higher altitudes and the distaste of chemical purification, filtration is the best way to go for backpacking, especially if large amounts of water are needed.
Most hand filters are granulated carbon, often with silver added. Though these are not ideal for home use, they are simplest for travel. | | This means avoiding both chemicals in foods and chemical consumptive habits, such as alcohol, caffeine, cocaine, marijuana, and nicotine—as is always the case for optimal health. A water purification system which removes chemicals is also a good investment for our health (See Chapter 1).
Care must be taken to obtain sufficient dietary proteins and L- amino acids that help form the immune tissues and antibodies. For proper protein production, adequate amounts of pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, folic acid, magnesium, and zinc are very important. |  ACTIVATED-CARBON FILTERS This is the least expensive water purification method. It is especially good at removing pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, gasoline compounds, radon, and chlorine. Carbon filters are sometimes used by themselves but are also incorporated into distillers and reverse osmosis systems. The use of an activated carbon filter in conjunction with a distiller will, in most cases, increase the filter's organic removal rate to over 90 percent.
